Wildlife preservation in focus as Glo-sponsored African Voices airs

As the Glo-sponsored CNN African Voices Changemakers goes on air this weekend, the issue of wildlife and the importance of preserving them will be discussed by two conservation enthusiasts.

Kenya’s Sheila Funnell and South Africa’s Marumo Nene are the two guests on the program who will be talking about the need for the protection and preservation of the African continent’s animal life.

Funnell is a research manager at the Grevy’s Zebra Trust who dedicates her time to the protection of zebras as she believes that the conservation of the animals will help sustain the livelihoods of the people. NCC, NBS data show Glo contributed the highest in telecom industry growth in 2020

A new report from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has revealed that Globacom recorded the biggest percentage increase in data users, thereby contributing mostly to the growth chart in the telecommunications industry in Nigeria in year 2020.

This correlates with an earlier report by  the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) which showed that Globacom led  in internet subscriber growth in the telecommunications sector in the third quarter of 2020.

NCC indicated on its website that the telecommunications  sector grew by 22percent with  28,145,458 new internet users from 125,728,328 at the end of December 2019 to 153,873,786 in December, 2020.

According to the commission, this growth in internet subscriptions and consequently in telecom sector culminated in  the quick recovery of the nation’s   economy from its recent  recession with a contribution of 12.45% to the Gross Domestic Product.

Globacom garnered the most percentage growth from  28,934,439 data users at the end of 2019 to 40,106,659 at the end of 2020, an addition of 11,172,220 new data subscribers or 39% growth in its data subscriber base. The growth outstrips the 22 percentage growth recorded in the sector in the year under review.

MTN was  second on the growth chart with a   21% growth, while Airtel recorded 20% increase to place third with  9mobile suffering  a loss with a 12% drop in its  data subscription figure.

Industry watchers disclosed that Glo data services are buoyed by the huge capacity international submarine cable called Glo1, a wholly owned facility that brought unprecedented bandwidth from Europe to Nigeria and other West African countries.

 It is the only  operator in Nigeria with integrated domestic and International network, while its high speed optic fibre network spans thousands kilometers covering almost the entire Nigerian landmass.

Globacom has a history of consistent network upgrade  which is recognized as one of the factors which  enhances data service delivery to Glo  subscribers who enjoy  attractive data packages with unmatched value.

Pink Box Project

We intend to reach tens of thousands of girls and women across Africa – Oma Areh

Girls With Period Initiative (GWP) recently launched ‘the Pink Box project’ at the Tejuosho Shopping Complex on the 2nd of December, 2020. The Pink Box project seeks to provide and distribute free sanitary pad dispensers at public places such as malls, schools and churches to counter the emergency period issues of girls and women across Africa.

In attendance at the socially distanced event were Secondary school students, young girls and women, amongst others.

Speaking at the event, Founder and Project Manager for Girls With Period Initiative (GWP), Patricia Vin-Okopi said;

This project and event are so dear to me because of my own personal experience. There are many times women and girls have had to hide or feel embarrassed due to seeing their period unexpectedly in public places. Asides from us providing the sanitary pad dispensers, we also want to encourage women to never be ashamed of their period through this event.

Actress and member of Board of Trustees for Girls With Period (GWP) Initiative, Mercy Johnson-Okojie also encouraged women to never hide or feel ashamed about their period.  In a statement to the attendees, she said;

Being a part of this project is really important to me, mostly because it’s one of the many projects we plan to work on to eliminate period poverty. A girl child or woman is out there somewhere with little or no access to proper menstrual hygiene and with this project, we hope to reach them and provide the proper and necessary menstrual care they need. I urge parents to do better in educating their children about periods and never make them feel it’s something they should hide or be embarrassed about. We need to normalise periods and stop projecting it as something dirty, strange or shameful.

Founder of WildFlower PR & Company and Chairman, Board of Directors for Girls With Period (GWP) Initiative, ‘Oma Areh addressed the stigma attached to periods and how GWP is tackling them.

Our goal with Project Pink Box is impacted; we intend to reach tens of thousands of girls and young women across Africa who are still dealing with less than sanitary periods. Our goal is to ensure that whenever a girl gets her period, she will be able to walk into a public place and pick a pad for free. This year, through the Pink Box Project, we want everyone to realise, understand and contribute towards ensuring that every girl deserves a free sanitary pad.

At the event, guests were educated on menstrual hygiene, including the stigma associated with women and periods. The men were not left out as they were also taught on how to approach and assist women that might have found themselves in an emergency period situation in public. A Q and A session was also conducted while the first Pink Box was stocked and displayed for the audience.

Glo propels growth in telecoms sector in Q3, 2020

Data grandmasters, Globacom, drove the growth in Nigeria’s telecommunications industry in the third quarter of 2020, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The data showed that the sector grew substantially in the quarter propelled by data subscriptions which rose by 23 percent year on year to stand at 151,063,413 million subscribers at the end of September, 2020. The figure for the corresponding period of 2019 was 122,792,291.

While Globacom recorded a 33.2 percent growth in its internet subscriber base between September, 2019, and September, 2020, MTN which came second had a growth percentage of 24.5 during the same period. Airtel, on its part, recorded 21.4% growth year on year. On the other hand, the NBS report showed that the fourth operator, 9mobile, witnessed a decline during the period under review. The network suffered a 14% slide in its internet subscriber figures between September, 2019, and September, 2020.

Glo data services are powered by the huge capacity international submarine cable called Glo-1, a wholly owned facility that brought unprecedented bandwidth from Europe to Nigeria and other West African countries.

Globacom’s remarkable performance in the sector is believed to be a result of the continuing network upgrade which has enhanced data service delivery to its subscribers. Company sources say Globacom is also continuing the extension of its massive fibre routes pan Nigeria at an accelerated pace so as to further improve broadband penetration and the range of Glo 4G+ data services to all parts of the country.

In addition to this, Globacom offers subscribers attractive data packages with unmatched value. For instance, 7GB goes for only N1500, while N10,000 gives the subscriber 50GB. It also has the Mega Data plans meant for Home Broadband users such as Small Office Home Office (SOHO) and SME customers as well as high end customers who have the need for higher data benefits with longer validity periods. Apart from these, Globacom also has numerous social data plans which meet every customer’s social needs.
